Making Your Home a Haven #5

wlw

We are down our last week of the Making Your Home a Haven Challenge! I hope you have made your home a priority this past month! And that it will also help in alleviating the stress of the holidays! This challenge was meant to help create the environment you want in your home, by making it a priority while tackling some of the major problem areas in the home.

If you are just joining us, you can still commit to the challenge! Here are the past weeks:

  1. Light a candle everyday and every time you see it, pray for peace in your home.
  2. Play positive, fun, uplifting music through out the day.
  3. List a few of the clutter spots in your home and make a plan for cleaning it up... Try these 4 steps to get started!
  4. Plan at least one family event & try to be extra affectionate this week!

Last week our family had a few family "events"... We had a video game night with the Tony Hawk wii game, a movie night watching Field of Dreams, I had a tea party with Hannah (that was actually planned by her, but I made sure to take the time to be present) and then we had a birthday celebration for my Dad's birthday!

Life can become so chaotic and sometimes it just seems to roll on by, whether you are ready or not! Being committed to creating these special moments with your family is how you can savor your short time with them.

For our last week of the challenge, again we are going to continue with all of our other challenges. This will allow you to catch up with whatever you are still wanting to finish! (For me, it's that stinkin garage!)

This week our focus is going to be... in the kitchen! Now, stick with me on this! Don't get discouraged, if you hate cooking or have no time!

We all know that the kitchen is the heart of the home. No matter what everyone seems to end up in there! Maybe it's because no matter what life brings, food brings us comfort... To our soul and through sharing!

This week cook things with pleasant aromas. Foods that when you walk in the door you are drawn to the kitchen. It doesn't matter whether you slaved over it all day or if you spent 5 minutes in the morning putting it in the crock-pot!

Also, pick a meal the family can cook together – include everyone in a task and take pictures so everyone can remember moments in the kitchen together – test tasting, stirring, setting the table, laughing and loving.

Warning - Cooking with kids can definitely dry up your patience! I wouldn't recommend this everyday! Lol In light of this, be prepared... What is an easy meal that you can accomplish as a family? Check out my Recipe page for easy meal ideas!

    - A toddler can easily dump ingredients into a cold crock-pot.
    - Elementary kids can stir, get drinks & set the table.
    - Older children can obviously do more, but may be the least excited! Lovingly try to include & encourage them!
**All the while, looking at your candle & praying for peace! Lol

I have mentioned before, I do have control issues! So allowing my family to help me, even when I desperately need it, is difficult for me! I do normally let the kids help with setting the table & getting the drinks! But this week I'm going to do Homemade Tortillas for the quesadillas and allow them me to help!

Sit down to the table, thanking everyone for their help and thanking God for this meal & time together!

Remove discontentment from your home or family and give thanks to God for the home God has given you in which to create a haven for your family.

**What would be your favorite meal to cook as a family??? Or try this week???

    My Target Trip 10/31

    Total Sale Value = $26.40
    Total Paid = 21.40
    SAVED 19%

So after avoiding Target like the plague for over a month, I finally went shopping there today! I was lost in there for about 2 hours! Hehe I just love to walk around, look at everything, dream of decorating my house with everything in there or wearing all the clothes! Target is definitely a favorite store... Thus why I avoid going there sometimes! I don't think I know how to go in and NOT buy something!
But today I decided to finally spend my birthday money that was burning a hole in my pocket! I weeded through all the clearance and sale items, while my youngest son Isaac just sat contently & chatted or played games on my phone! He's the best shopping kid EVER!!!
So here is what I left with... besides clothes! Everything was necessity & I decided to cheat on my meal plan tonight with a $3.00 frozen pizza! :)

    My Meal Plan 10/31 - 11/06

This will be our first week without baseball in months! We will actually be home this week! It seems it is just in time, because the weather has quickly changed to winter weather, cheerleading starts in November, AND I have started going back to school!
I went for about a year before my 1st child was born. I always had plans to return, but between kids, marriage and life it just never happened! I am going for my teaching degree! I am very excited... I'm sure that will die down! Lol I just finished my 1st week of online classes and got all my work finished early and 100% on my quizzes! I hope I can continue to figure out how to balance everything! Time will tell!

    A Love Like No Other

I think this picture speaks perfectly to how our modern culture views Love! Love is a magical feeling, it's fireworks and butterflies, it creates perfect harmony, it matters above all else. But if you've ever been in any relationship... whether with a spouse, friend, family, etc. You've quickly realized that is entirely false.

There is only ONE who can love you with a perfect love that will sustain you through everything, that you can rely on and give your entire self to... God. He will never disappoint.

How many of these verses describe your current relationships?

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
    ~ I John 4:18

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
    ~ I Corinthians 13:4-8

Love does no harm to its neighbor.
    ~ Romans 13:10

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
    ~ John 15:13

Most likely, these are a far cry from how you feel in your relationships. We are all human. That is why we must only rely on Christ for our foundation and self worth. People WILL fail you! But Christ never will!

How would you rate yourself on giving love like this???

Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another.
    ~II John 1:6

We are commanded to love... Just as Christ loves us, which is described in some of the above verses. But it is soo difficult! How can we possibly accomplish this???

We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
    ~ I John 4:19-21

It is a tall order, but through Christ it can be done! If we rely on him for our love, then and only then can we give that love to others!

**I suggest picking one of these verses or one of the other many 'love' verses, write it out on a notecard and post it somewhere you will see it through out the day! This type of love does not always come naturally, but it is possible!

Making Your Home a Haven #4

    wlw

How are you doing with the Fall Challenge??? Have you stayed committed??? I know that this is a long challenge, but the purpose and hope is that some of these things will become habits!

We all want peace in our home, but how can it happen if we are not trying, preparing, praying and aware of the times we are not contributing to that peace? So persevere, ladies!

This week we are going to continue with all of these past challenges listed... Keep your candle lit and praying. Keep the music playing. And if you have not cleaned up the clutter, you can play catch up this week! (I know I will be.)

Now, to add to all of those things we have a two-part challenge for this week!

Part #1: We are going to plan at least one family event!

What does your family enjoy doing together???
      - movie night
      - game night
      - pillow fights
      - dance party
      - nerf gun war
      - evening walks
      - jumping on the trampoline
      - reading books together
      - cooking/baking together
      - video games
      - playing catch
      - painting nails

The list goes on... Take into consideration what your schedule allows time for, the weather and the age of your kids.

Planning a movie or game night for toddlers may be impossible and a stress inducer. But taking a walk or reading books might be the perfect thing to calm them down before bed.

If you have teenagers they may dred the thought of hanging out & chatting with their parents. So why not take the pressure off and just make dinner together or play their favorite video game with them? Conversation is bound to happen and won't be as forced.

Don't let this stress you out! If you are a planner/control freak like me, this may cause you to put added stress on yourself of coming up with the perfect family time spent together! But here's the truth... Your husband & kids could care less if you leave the kitchen messy, delay running an errand & have unfinished laundry to spend time with them!

Purposing to have these moments in the middle of a plain week will bring unity and create some great memories with your family! We shouldn't only wait until special occasions or holidays to make memories!

Part #2 - We are going to try to be extra affectionate this week!

Now if you are like me, this may scare you a little bit! This will definitely be tough for me! I am just not very 'touchy'! I feel claustrophobic almost always! Haha I don't know why... But I'm working on it!

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
      ~ I John 3:18

Our spouses and children really do need our touch! Actions speak louder than words! What are we silently communicating to our family???

**I hope that you have enjoyed this challenge so far! And that you are noticing a difference in your home! Let me know what fun family moments you create this week!

      Bob a.k.a Gregory Jr.

Today is my oldest son's 10th birthday! I can barely believe it! It seems like just the other day he was too spoiled to walk and relied on his sister to 'talk for him'! Hehe He was quite the whiny baby and toddler, but has ironically turned into our most mild child!

It seems the older Bob gets the easier he becomes. He is very mild and soft spoke. He is a great listener. He is definitely an approval seeker and enjoys succeeding in everything! His latest passion is baseball! He has loved being the 'star'! He plays pitcher, catcher & short!

He is a perfectionist in everything, from his looks, to playing sports, to his school work! This was his summer Justin Beiber look! He had the hair flip down & everything!

He has a protective love for his family, especially for his little brother.  He is a hardworker and enjoys helping out! He gets that and his looks from his Dad.

He is as smart as can be... He's always gotten straight A's! All the boys want to be his friend and all the girls want to be his 'girl'! (This was told to me by a teacher!) He's just so easy to be around and has really become a great leader & example!

My husband says I've molded him to be the best husband, which will definitely be both a blessing and a curse! Because his wife will have found a prize, but I might be the worst Mother-in-law, because I will know he is perfect! Lol

Bob is definitely becoming quite the little man... And his father & I could not be more proud! As you may know he is my stepchild, but I have been with him almost from the start of his life and him and I barely know the difference between a title & blood!

I am excited to watch him grow into a young man!

**P.S. The name Bob came from his sister, Dilon. She was barely 1 yr old when he was born and just learning to speak. When she said baby, it sounded like 'Bobby'. So in an effort to 'speak her language', everyone started to say it. And now it has stuck! Since starting school, he decided to go by Gregory... I will never be able to do this! :)

      (Make Ahead) Egg Sandwiches

I, like most of you, have a desire to feed my family a healthy, hot breakfast every morning. BUT... I am normally running around, scrambling to make sure everyone is ready for school (a.k.a. won't embarrass me by how their dressed).

So, in my effort to have the best of both worlds, I have been searching for easy, simple breakfast ideas! Egg Sandwich... How much simpler and healthier can you get?!?!

Of course, I've made egg sandwiches before, but these can be frozen and then ready to eat whenever! I found this idea on Pinterest. (Love that site, by the way!) But I really don't know how I haven't thought of doing it before... It's so simple! Of course, you could also eat these right away! It's a great way to save time by being able to make a lot all together!

Egg Sandwiches can easily be made with whatever ingredients you like and already have... I just used what I had on hand. You could add meat, any kind of cheese, use an english muffin, etc. The possibilities are endless! If you prefer no salt, or organic products... You have that choice!

The best part though, is the fact that this is sooo cheap! Here is my cost for the ingredients... 18 Egg's $2.47, Shredded Cheese $1.34, Butter $0.50, 12 Mini -Bagels (mine were free) $2.99 = $5.51 is enough to make 12 and have still have everything except bagels leftover!!! Compare that to about $3.00 for the fast food version!

      Tuesday Tweek... Meal Plan Motivation

Have you ever tried meal planning? Do you think it's pointless? Do you not see any benefits of meal planning??? I used to feel the same way!

Or maybe you are committed to meal planning? You do it every week? Do you ever dread making your meal plan??? I know I do sometimes!

No matter which category you fall into this should be a motivating post for you! Maybe you should print it out and put it on your fridge as a reminder!

There are no doubt a few downsides to meal planning...
      1. It takes time to sit down and plan your meals
      2. It requires you to make a more specific shopping list

So there you have it... Two things that can honestly sometimes make you feel like you never want to meal plan again! BUT... Those 2 'cons' do not outweigh all of the positives!

Here are 20 positives that I have come up with:
      1. Less likely to eat out = SAVING MONEY
      2. More likely to sit & eat as a family
      3. More likely to eat healthier
      4. I feel less stressed about cooking knowing that I have planned my meals according to my schedule.
      5. I can plan my meal plan based on what I already have at home so that I don't have to buy as much at the store. = SAVING MONEY
      6. It eliminates running back to the store for more items to complete a meal. = SAVING TIME & MONEY
      7. Ensures you only buy what you will use & not waste anything = SAVING MONEY
      8. Never have that dreaded moment of standing in the middle of your kitchen trying come up with a last minute meal idea off the top of my head, while everyone is telling you that they're "starving"!!!
      9. I enjoy cooking more, because I like to add in a few new recipes to try each week.
      10. I always have the ingredients in the house for whatever I’m making because I make up my menu plan before going grocery shopping. = SAVING TIME
      11. I always know what meat needs to be thawed before a meal. = SAVING TIME
      12. I can easily plan my weekly menu around what is on sale that particular week. = SAVING TIME & MONEY
      13. I plan quick and easy meals for busy nights (especially crockpot meals which can be prepared in the morning when I’m not rushed and have more energy). = SAVING TIME
      14. My kids and husband enjoy knowing in advance what is for dinner.
      15. Helps me to avoid last minute, unhealthy, desperation meals.
      16. I don’t have to spend any more time in the kitchen than is absolutely necessary. = SAVING TIME
      17. Knowing in advance what is coming up allows me to often prep one meal while making another. = SAVING TIME
      18. Dinner is organized so that I know what time we will eat every night!
      19. If I plan to eat out, I can make sure it is somewhere I enjoy and that I take advantage of discounts or coupons (kids eat free nights, BOGO meals, etc.) = SAVING MONEY
      20. It gives me something to blog about every Monday :)
So there you have it! If you have never meal planned or struggle to stay committed to planning, I hope this can help be your motivation! It does take a few extra minutes of planning in the beginning of the week, but it saves a lot of time and stress through out the week trying to figure out what to eat when your low on time and patience!
A huge reason that I can spend so little money on feeding my large family is because I meal plan!
