Week #2 of Summer Activities

Another successful week of Summer in our house! And so far it's only cost me $4.00! Now that's my kinda fun!

Lately, my kids have been obsessed with riding bikes! I love it! They're outside, playing together and burning off energy! We have had a few accidents, but nothing too terrible... Yet. ;)


We went to the $1.00 Summer Movies at Regal! We saw Journey 2. It was good. A little exciting for my 4-year-old, but he just sat on my lap & closed his eyes. Overall, it was a good movie. We brought our own bag of chips to snack on. Make sure you get there early, because sometimes they can be packed if there are a lot of day cares.


I did get some baking done this week. I made banana muffins & bread, Homemade Granola, Homemade Granola Bars & Waffles for the freezer. I let Isaac help with mixing the waffles. It is difficult to let my kids help in the kitchen, but I know they like it. I just have to be prepared for the extra time it will take.


On the first day of Summer we went to Rita's for discounted Italian Ice with my parents. My husband was out of town on business and they were keeping me company... A.K.A. Distracted from being alone! We walked there from their house. 


On the way home, Isaac caught his first firefly! He was so excited! He didn't want me to take a picture of it, because he didn't want it to fly away! When he finally let it go, I was trying to take a picture of it and it flew right onto my finger. I freaked out screaming! I don't know why, but it scared me. Needless to say, I did not get this sweet moment on camera! Lol



We also had some baseball... Of course! This hit he stroked the ball out to center field!


We also had a beach day! It was too short, though. Could have stayed there all day!








Another night that my husband was out of town, we went to my Grandparents with my Mom. We took the kids down to feed the ducks. Of course it ended with poop on Dilon's foot & Hannah's hand! Yuck!


We ended the week by celebrating my sister's bday! And I welcomed her to the Coach purse club! I think I was just as excited about giving it as she was about getting it!

Of course, these pictures glamorize my week! It was a fun week, but it was not without sibling rivalry, running errands, doing schoolwork, house chores, lawn work, etc. I definitely don't have any pictures of that!

Meal Plan 06/25 - 07/01


This week was another successful summer week. Lots of relaxing, playing outside, sleeping late (my kids are getting better at this) and spending time with family and friends.

This past week I spent a day or two in the kitchen... I made Banana Muffins and Bread, Granola Bars, and Granola. This week my goal is to make some tortillas to eat and for the freezer, Crock Pot Chicken and Homemade PopTarts!

I've talked before that I'm not at the point right now where I want to spend a few days in the kitchen cooking for the month. I think it would be beneficial, but I just don't have the patience for it right now. So, this is how I make it work for me... I do a little bit here are there.

I went shopping during Harris Teeter Super Doubles. I did get a few things for free and really cheap! I paid $42.11 for all of this, plus 4 big things of blueberries ($0.99 ea.) and 2 fresh pastas. I got free butter, hot sauce and barbeque sauces. I got cheap pasta, toilet paper, crackers, eggs, milk and Propel. I felt it was a success!


And I lowered my Harris Teeter total by $5.00 by using my Register Rewards from Walgreens last week when I bought the FREE toothpaste. 
It was $3.00 ea. - $1.00/2 + $2.50 RR = 2 for FREE

Easy NO Bake Homemade Granola Bars



I have started to try to make more things homemade.... For a few different reasons.
  1. Ever since I start doing my Monthly Meal Plan and Monthly Shopping, I've realized that if I make things at home my money can go farther. Remember you always pay for convenience!
  2. For the last few months I've been trying to take baby steps towards serving my family healthier options. Cooking at home makes this a little easier. I can control exactly what goes into the recipe.
  3. And I guess if I'm going to Pin a million recipes on Pinterest I might as well do something with them, right?!?!


Granola bars are definitely something that my family loves, but I've pretty much stopped buying them. The portions have gotten smaller and the price has gotten higher. They are full of sugar and they're not very filling anyway.

At first, when I made these, I was thinking it was a total waste, but apparently I just wasn't patient enough to let them set. ;)

I made them again today! Can't wait for them to be done! I doubled the recipe and tweaked it a little bit. They are really so easy! If you've made the Homemade Granola, it's basically the same thing just no oven.

Week #1 of Summer

So far Summer is starting off well! Trying to stay busy, but not set the bar too high! Lol I know I'm not the only one with that thought process. I want my kids to learn to be content without being entertained!

Here's some of the fun we had this week....

Monday - We spent the whole day at the beach with my Mom and then she took the kids for the evening! Greg and I had a date night and then home for school work! :)


Tuesday - We spent the day at home. The weather was cool, so the kids got to play outside. We went to Hannah's closing ceremonies for softball and she got another trophy, because her team had the best record in her division! We ended the night at my Mom's celebrating my Grandads b-day with angel food cake & strawberries! Yum!

 Wednesday - My husband left to go out of town for work. I had my sister spend the night on Tuesday so she could help me with the kids... I had made a doctor and dentist apt. This was Hannah's 2nd attempt to get her cavity filled. She succeeded with the help of Benadryl and an Ipod!


For being so brave I took her to Starbucks for a treat! She had a fun time trying to suck from a straw with a numb mouth! :)


Thursday - Another relaxing day... We had another dentist appointment. And we painted nails and kids played outside with friends.



Friday - Was quite the crazy day! Of course the kids slept in... And I had forgotten about the camera crew from CBN that was coming to my house for taping! That was great fun! So I'll be on national television without a shower! 
I also had to run to the grocery store and take a kid to a doctor appointment. See some trip details HERE.


 Kids also made a bazillion paper airplanes and had a contest of whose would go the farthest!


Saturday - We spent 9 hours out at the ball field watching Bob play! Thankfully the weather was beautiful! 


The kids had fun entertaining themselves!


Sunday - Father's Day!!! I served my Hubby breakfast in bed. He swears his eyes were opened! :)



I made him a super lunch with all my cheap Harris Teeter findings! He thought he was in heaven! 


The kids were thrilled to give Daddy their present that we had been working on all week while he was gone! He love it, of course! Thank you Pinterest!

 

We went to dinner at his parents house! And then my parents came by with brownie sundaes and to watch a few episodes of "Call of the Wildman" show! If you haven't seen it, you're missing out!

All in all it was a great week! Haven't had to dig into my summer activity list too much this week! So we'll see how this week goes! I'll keep ya posted!

Meal Plan 06/18 - 06/24


Well, we have officially survived our first week of Summer! It was actually a great week... of weather, relaxing, "sleeping in" (a.k.a. kids being my alarm, instead of an actual alarm) and fun activities.

We kept it simple this week. Staying at home mostly.

This week is simple. My goal is to try to fill my freezer and pantry with some quick & easy meals. I also have a few recipes I need to post. This week I made Homemade Granola Bars... Easy and yummy!


I ran to the store on Friday and found a bunch of great deals!



My kitchen was so bare it was ridiculous! So I made a list of all the sales that didn't require coupons and ran in. I was in and out in less than an hour... With all my kids! There were great deals on produce from the "old" cart! 


Organic Bananas $0.39/lb.


I found 4 of these diced peppers for only $0.99 each! And what we don't use this week we will freeze!


This is organic spinach for only $0.99 a tub! And there was a sticker coupon for $1.00 off of 2... So I got them for $0.50 each! That's a steal!

I only spent $60!!

28 Different Breakfast Ideas

Since I've started Monthly Meal planning and Monthly Shopping, there are of course a few things that I've realized... Things that work well AND things that need to be changed and tweeked.

One thing I've noticed is that we need more breakfast options! And especially healthier meals.

I like to think we're pretty healthy eaters. We're definitely not the best... But we are pretty well balanced. Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day and I want to make sure my family and I are starting the day off right.

So, I've spent some time this last week searching for some healthy options.

We have always limited juices and milk to almost always only with a meal. This is best for teeth. When you're chewing your mouth creates a saliva to protect your teeth from the food. When you drink it is not created. Therefore, sugary drinks are just left stuck on your teeth.

One thing I am going to start implementing is that my kids drink a glass of water in the morning. This is said to increase your metabolism, but that is not the reasoning for my kids. I want to avoid them getting dehydrated and it's good for your skins elasticity and defense against the sun.

And here are the new breakfast meal options I will be starting to implementing:

  • Poached Eggs on Toast
  • Sunny Side Up Eggs w/ Toast
  • Eggs, Bacon/Sausage & Toast
  • Hard-boiled Eggs
  • Homemade Granola w/ Milk & Fresh Fruit
 
  • Scones w/ Fruit or Yogurt
  • Muffins w/ Yogurt, Eggs, Fruit
  • Banana Bread/Muffins
  • Pancakes
  • Homemade Poptarts
  • Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
  • Granola Bars w/ Yogurt
  • Coffee Cake
  • Breakfast Burritos
  • Crock Pot Breakfast Casserole
  • Mini Breakfast Casseroles
  • French Toast
  • Quiche
  • Toast
  • Bagels & Cream Cheese
  • Cold Cereal
*My goal is to make and freeze as many of these meals as possible over the next week!

Meal Plan 06/11 - 06/17


Maybe I should change the title to "Tuesday Meal Plan", considering this is the third week in a row that I haven't posted on Monday!? I was at the beach all day yesterday with my Mom & then she took the kids after we got home! It was great to come home and jump straight into the shower, instead of waiting for all the kids to get showered! My husband and I had a great date night out to dinner and then came home and did school work until midnight! That's always the best way to end a date night, right??

Last week's meal plan went to mostly as planned. We did eat out one night when we were down to only 2 kids. Gotta take advantage of those times. :)

We're now officially on Summer Vacation!!! Today is rainy and the rest of the week doesn't look too different... We'll see how well it goes keeping the kids busy with inside activities! I posted some of our summer ideas HERE!

Well I'm sad to say, with only 4 days left in "my month", I went over budget! :( I just couldn't pass up chicken for $1.68/lb AND whole wheat bread for $0.85 each AND Apples at $0.77/lb AND a whole chicken fryer for $0.99/lb! I was down to only 2 chicken breasts! That's appalling in this household... According to my husband! Who practically eats his weight in protein every week! I only went over $40 and in the long run it's saving me! So I'm not too worried! 

I think feeding a family of 6 for $240/month is still amazing! ;)
